The Kindness of People We Don't Know: How a Man I Barely Knew Assisted Me Land the Role That Changed My Life

During the closing decade of the 80s, I was embarking on a backpacking trip to Europe with a travel partner. Since my friend was interested in starting a postgraduate program in New York, we had planned a fortnight visit there on the way to London.

We got to the graduate housing, a large multi-story edifice on the Upper West Side named International House. After dropping our bags, we went directly to the dining hall, where we grabbed food, sat down, and began chatting with other diners.

Sitting next to me was an individual of Iraqi origin enrolled in an engineering program at a prestigious New York university. He inquired what I did, and I shared that I had just graduated with a science degree and had been working on studies involving microscopic analysis.

He mentioned that there was an electron microscope unit at the institution – right next door to the school of engineering, which was the reason he was familiar with it. He suggested that I consider applying for a role with them. I dismissed the idea, explaining that I was heading off to Europe and, more critically, I lacked a US visa.

The next day I ventured out, coming back to the dining hall that after dark. The Iraqi student walked over to me and informed me that he had organized a discussion for me with the director of the microscopy lab at Columbia. Given that he had gone to the trouble, I attended the interview – but right away informed my host that I was without a work permit, so I was unable to accept the role.

Reflecting the city's spirit – a place where everything seems achievable – she said: “That can be arranged. When can you start?” I missed my plane to London.

I worked there for 36 months. A perk of the job was that I also received no-cost classes at Columbia, and I took advantage to finish a master’s of international affairs.

I never saw that student again and I can't recall his identity, but his incredible act of kindness changed my life in multiple respects. I lacked the bravery or self-belief to contact anyone at an prestigious college and request employment. And, I had consistently hoped to pursue education overseas, but lacked the financial means without that tuition waiver.

Critically, that role at the university paved the way for a job in Zurich where I met my wonderful partner, with whom I am raising four amazing children. It was a total sliding doors moment. That benevolent individual set me on a different course in life, and I’m always appreciative.
