PSG Edges Marseille on Penalties to Claim Trophee des Champions Season-Opening Trophy in Kuwait.

Trophy celebration scene

PSG has now won the prestigious trophy on 14 different occasions.

The Parisian giants needed a stoppage-time equaliser followed by a perfect spot-kick decider to overcome their arch-rivals in Kuwait and secure a fourth straight French Super Cup victory.

The Champions League holders seemed to be coasting towards a straightforward triumph in the match between the French league champions and the Coupe de France holders after Ousmane Dembele found the scoring early on.

However, the southern French side fired two times in the closing moments to take a surprise lead. First, Mason Greenwood converted from the spot-kick, before the defender inadvertently turned the ball into his own net for an own goal.

In a remarkable twist of fortune, Goncalo Ramos grabbed a vital equaliser in the dying moments to force the contest into a penalty shootout. PSG goalkeeper Chevalier then stood as the hero, saving decisive kicks from Matt O'Riley and Hamed Traore.

From the spot, Ramos, Vitinha, the full-back, and the young talent all converted with composure for PSG to complete a convincing penalty win.

The record winners PSG, who faced last season's Ligue 1 second-placed team Marseille after achieving a league and cup double, have now won this competition for the 12th time in the last 13 seasons.
