Crawley Unaware of Stokes' Controversial 'Weak Men' Comments

England opener Zak Crawley has indicated he had no knowledge of comments made by captain Stokes regarding the dressing room not being "those lacking fortitude".

The all-rounder made those words in multiple interviews following England's defeat in the second match of the Ashes series against Australia earlier this month.

Ahead of the third Test, where England are staring at a series loss at the earliest opportunity, Stokes noted he had let his message to "circulate freely" among the squad.

"I've done the necessary discussions in recent days that I needed to have done," said the England leader.

However, after the opener scored 85 on the penultimate day in the third Test, he commented: "I didn't see that."

"I didn't see and wasn't really looking out for it. Our approach is to take everything that is said in the media with a pinch of salt," he added.

Frank Discussions and Steady Philosophy

The captain made the "fragile individuals" comment after his side suffered a loss in Brisbane to fall two matches behind.

The team subsequently took a break to Noosa in the gap between the second and the upcoming Tests.

Before this match, he revealed his team had held "raw" conversations and he had asked them to "show a bit of dog" in their battle to remain in contention in the series.

Nevertheless, the Kent batsman stated the guidance from the captain and coach McCullum had remained consistent with their previous three years in charge.

"It's been extremely upbeat, the same as always," noted the opener. "The focus is just trying to be optimistic, play our way, with lots of freedom. We believed we were capable of an extraordinary feat entering this Test."

The Hosts On the Verge of Historic Series Victory

Crawley's dismissal late on Saturday came during a decisive triple-strike by Australian off-spinner Lyon.

Lyon's three wickets in 20 deliveries – including the wickets of Brook and Stokes himself – left England 207-6 in pursuit of a daunting target of 435.

This means, Australia need four wickets on Sunday's last day to secure an unassailable 3-0 lead after three Tests.

A loss would prolong the English team's drought in Australia to 18 consecutive matches and ensure a fourth straight overseas Ashes loss.

The current battle will be completed in just eleven days of cricket – after England losing the first two Tests in two and four days respectively.

Not since 1921, when the Australians completed victory in the UK in eight days, has the outcome of the urn been determined so quickly. Australia have also triumphed in 11 days on two other instances in the 21st century.

"This is disheartening," said Crawley. "We came here to win the Ashes and now we are facing elimination at this point."

"There will still be plenty to play for and we'll definitely view it with that mindset," he continued.

"The challenge has been tough. They're a very, very good side. It was inevitably tough touring here to face them. They entered as the front-runners and have demonstrated their quality."

Ollie Pope's Position Under Scrutiny

Although Crawley's performance in Adelaide likely secures doubts about his immediate place in the England team, Ollie Pope appears under immense pressure for his position in the fourth Test on Boxing Day.

The Surrey batsman fell for 17 in England's second knock on Saturday, extending his poor record versus the old enemy.

In 16 Ashes innings, Pope has failed to score a half-century and averages just 17.62.

A solitary other England player since 1900 – Dennis Amiss – has played an equal number of innings in the top six in Ashes Tests and recorded a poorer average.

However, Crawley said any notion his teammate is being scrutinised comes from "you guys" – meaning the journalists – "and not within the team."

"We all know how good of a player he is," added he. "Ollie has enjoyed a productive year if I'm honest."

"He has played some really good knocks. It is talk from the outside. There is no chat like that regarding Pope amongst the players," he finished.
